Yonex East of Scotland Junior Championships 2007

Once again the Yonex East of Scotland Junior Championships brought together the most talented juniors from the under 13 age group up to under 19 from all parts of Scotland as well as players from Ireland and England with entries up once again on the previous year. This year, the semi finals and finals were back to their normal venue in Hall 2 of Meadowbank where spectators were treated to some excellent matches, confirming the high standard and athleticism of our young players.

Star of the finals’ day was Lanarkshire’s Kirsty Gilmour who won 3 events, the girls’ singles and doubles at U17 and the mixed doubles in the U15s. There were also 5 double winners, Jordan Gilvear & Lucy Nevin (under 13 age group), Lewis Gallagher (Under 15), Andrew Gilliland (under 17) and Kenny Young (under 19).

Lothian players who excelled were Mathew Carder who reached the final of the Under 15 boys doubles and won the Under 15 mixed doubles. Michael Campbell won the Under 17 boys doubles while his older brother, Martin reached 3 finals in the Under 19 age group and was unfortunate to come out on the losing end on each occasion. However Martin’s disappointment in the boys doubles was compensated for as the winners were his Lothian team mates, Peter Hockey and Duncan Leith. In the mixed doubles, Martin lost out to fellow Lothian player Roya Arabshahi who was partnered by Kenny Young (Glasgow). Roya also reached the final of the Under 19 girls doubles.

Tournament Referee, Ian Campbell expressed his thanks to Yonex for their continued sponsorship of the event, to Meadowbank Sports Centre for providing the excellent facilities, the members of Lothian Badminton Group and the Officials of BADMINTONscotland for their assistance during the event, and lastly to the players for their high standard of sportsmanship as well as the excellent standard of play.
