Lothian Group Successes
Season 08/09 was a notable one for Lothian players with
our players enjoying a remarkable level of success not only in Scotland and
other parts of the UK, but also at tournaments in Europe and as far afield
as Pune in India. Once more we celebrated successes from Junior level right
up to the Veteran ranks. Amongst the many fantastic achievements, perhaps
the highlights were Martin Campbell and Paul van Rietvelde playing off for
the bronze medal in the Commonwealth Youth Games in India, Jillie Cooper
winning her first EBU title at the Scottish International Championships and
then following this up with a further victory in the Welsh Open and our
newly crowned BADMINTONscotland President, Christine Black winning a
gold medal in the European Masters ladies doubles.
Unexpected meeting
3 of Lothian’s top junior
players (Usman Ulhaq, Michael Campbell and Matthew Carder) were in luck when
they came across the Olympic Champion Lin Dan in the same restaurant after
the Friday night session at the 2009 All England Championships. Lin Dan
happily signed autographs and posed for photos with the 3 boys. Meeting our
boys must have inspired him as he went on to regain his All England crown
later in the weekend!

2009
Yonex East of Scotland Championships
Despite missing a number of familiar faces as a result of
Inter County commitments and the forthcoming European Junior event in Milan,
entries were up on the previous year at the 2009 Yonex East of Scotland
Championships held at Meadowbank on the 28th and 29th
March. Lothian players were well to the fore in the finals and 3 of the 5
titles went to the same players who had triumphed in the Glasgow
Championships earlier in the month.
