Yonex MCFM East of Scotland Junior Championships 2023

It’s been a busy couple of weeks with the Yonex MCFM East of Scotland Under 15 and Under 19 Junior Championships taking place on the 28 th /29 th October and the Under 13 and Under 17 Championships taking place two weeks later (4th/5th November). For both competitions, matches on Saturday were held at the Jack Kane Centre with Meadowbank Sports Centre being used on Sunday for the semi finals and finals. As always, there were many entertaining and competitive matches throughout each tournament culminating in some excellent semi finals and finals on both weekends.

Unfortunately, the Under 15 and Under 19 championships was impacted by the extreme weather conditions at the time which resulted in some players being unable to travel and compete. Fortunately, the large majority of players were able to make it and in addition to players from many parts of Scotland, we were also delighted that we had players from England playing in the tournament.

Katrina Chan was the only triple winner of the U15/U19 tournament, winning all three events in the under 19 age group. Evan Kenny also won two events (boys’ doubles and mixed doubles) in the under 19 age group and in the under 15s, both Alfie Martin (boys’ singles and mixed) and Lothian’s Ingrid Wang (girls’ singles and doubles) won two events. Other Lothian winners were Qing Yang Xiao in the U15 girls’ doubles with Ingrid and Tushara Senthilrajaram winning the U15 mixed doubles with Alfie Martin (Lanarkshire).

In the U13/U17 tournament, titles were shared widely in both age groups with only Ewan Stewart in the under 17s and Akshara Chavan in the under 13 age group winning two titles. There were some great performances from Lothian players with Melrick Dsouza & Dylan Jia winning the U13 boys’ doubles, Deepti Vijayakumar & Qing Yang Xiao winning the U17 girls’ doubles and Tushara Senthilrajaram winning the U17 mixed doubles with Alfie Martin (Lanarkshire).

We greatly appreciate the support from the members of the Lothian Badminton Group committee who assisted throughout both tournaments and to the staff at the Jack Kane and Meadowbank Sports Centres who were very helpful at the respective venues. We are also very grateful to the Badminton Scotland Court Officials group for providing umpires for the finals.

Our Sponsors

We were delighted that Martin Campbell was in attendance on both weekends to watch the finals and then present the prizes. It really adds to the tournament to have a sponsor who has such a strong relationship with our sport and this event in particular, attending the finals. We really do appreciate the support that we receive from Martin Campbell Financial Management and Yonex, supported by Gannon Sports, as without their help, it would not be possible for these tournaments to take place.
