This year’s Yonex MCFM East of Scotland Under 15 and Under 19 Junior Championships were held at the new Meadowbank Sports Centre. Meadowbank was home to this event for almost 50 years prior to its closure for redevelopment in 2017.
We were delighted to welcome our new sponsor for the event, Martin Campbell Financial Management. Martin has close family associations with the tournament and competed regularly in the event during his junior career. We were delighted that Martin was able to attend the finals and present the prizes. As always, the tournament attracted a very strong entry and there were many entertaining and competitive matches throughout the weekend culminating with some excellent semi finals and finals on the Sunday.
There were some strong performances from Lothian players over the weekend with Deepti Vijayakumar retaining the two titles in the U15 age group which she had won last year. This time she won the girls’ doubles title with fellow Lothian player Qing Yang Xiao. In the Under 19 age group, Lothian’s Ishbel McCallister won the U19 doubles with Katrina Chan.Lewis Smith was the only triple winner this weekend, winning all three events in the under 15 age group. There were two double winners over the course of weekend with Anthony McGuire as well as Deepti winning two events in their respective age groups.
Lothian continues to be very grateful to Yonex, ably supported by Gannon Sports, who have now sponsored this event for well over 20 years. We also appreciate the support from the members of the Lothian Badminton Group committee who assisted throughout the weekend and to the staff at Meadowbank Sports Centre who were very supportive throughout the weekend. We are very keen to establish Meadowbank once again as the regular home of the tournament in future years.
